January 31, 2007 | Category:BILLBOARD REPORTS | Author: Josh Cox

Well the numbers are in, and despite their racy antics at recent concerts, Pretty Ricky’s Late Night Special topped this week’s Billboard Top 200 album chart, with sales of 132,000. Also finally in the top 10 is Robin Thicke! His album The Evolution of Robin Thicke has been out for a good lil minute, but thanks to the success of “Lost Without You,” the album makes its way towards the top coming in at number 8. I’m a big fan of this guy’s music, so I’m glad to see he’s finally gettin the credit he deserves. Check out the the top 100 albums after the jump:

So on tomorrow’s episode of Tyra, she will address those bathing suit photos that made their way around the Internet and tabloids. Check it out:

Personally, I don’t really like Tyra’s show. All she talks about is herself. Everytime she has a guest she interrupts them with “well when I did this..” or “my mother this…” It’s annoying! But that’s just my opinion… Post your’s below!

Last night, former Destiny’s Child members LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson, and Farrah Franklin were featured on the E! Network’s new series Blvd. of Broken Dreams. The show goes inside the stories of celebrities whose “dreams turn tragic and fame goes sour fast.” The former DC ladies talk about what lead to the break-up, as well as more details about it. You can watch it below.

I must say that I’m really glad to see that my girl LeToya bounced back from all of this and came back on top! Lookin foward to her video for “Obvious.” This video is a prime example of why I can’t stand Matthew Knowles.

American Idol Auditions Exposed

January 27, 2007 | Category:TV NEWS | Author: Josh Cox

Yahoo.com published the first hand accounts af a talented singer who went to one of this season’s American Idol tryouts. Here’s an excerpt from that article:

An “Idol” staffer ushered me over to a booth along with three others in line. I had noticed earlier that a woman dressed as a homecoming queen (a nod to the chorus of “Daydream Believer”) got the coveted golden ticket allowing her to move to the next round. Could she sing? Who knows. Few others followed in her footsteps.

At the judging table in front of us sat two 20-something producers. One was a young woman with sunglasses so large, she could have been napping behind them. The other was a young man with his head propped up in his hands. He said nothing and looked bored.

Suddenly Simon seemed not so rude after all.

Each of us would be given roughly 15 seconds of our chosen song to perform. No questions, no names.

Two of the singers next to me were great, even passionate. Another one, not so much.

Then I stepped forward and sang, belting out the tune with all I had. It’s Aretha, after all.

I was louder than the rest, working my vibrato, stretching my arms out. The bored guy perked up a little, but still said nothing. This was the moment I had waited six hours for.

After less than 20 seconds, it was over.

Interesting. I’ve heard about how the auditions work, but I never knew it was like that. Read the full article here.

Captiol & Virgin Records Announce Merger

January 27, 2007 | Category:IN THE NEWS, MUSIC NEWS & VIDEOS | Author: Josh Cox

EMI Group announced today (Jan. 25) that the company is merging its Capitol and Virgin music labels to form The Capitol Music Group, a new pop, rock and urban label that will comprise the Capitol and Virgin Records imprint.

The new label group will also house the Capitol Nashville imprint, Caroline Distribution, EMI Christian Music Group; EMI Televisa Music; and Mute.

The Capitol Music Group will be headed by Lava Records founder and former Atlantic executive Jason Flom, who broke such artists as Kid Rock, Twisted Sister, Sugar Ray, The Coors and others.

Flom joined EMI as Chairman and CEO of Virgin Records America in November 2005 and will report directly to EMI’s chairman, Eric Nicoli.

Flom will oversee the combined Capitol and Virgin rosters in the US, which includes artists like Chingy, Jazze Pha and Cee Lo Green, Cherish, Bubba Sparxxx, Letoya Luckett, Korn, Lenny Kravitz, Robbie Williams.

“The music business shows exciting growth potential, but the environment remains extremely challenging,” Nicoli said. “In order to thrive and meet the demands of a rapidly evolving and dynamic music market, we must re-think our operations, not only to make them efficient, but also more effective and focused on creative excellence. By bringing Capitol and Virgin into one label group, we will be better equipped than ever to promote and nurture artistic talent. We remain strongly committed to developing artists in America in all genres as this is a key repertoire source for the world, and to that end, we will maintain our A&R focus and keep a presence in both LA and New York. This structure will also allow us to further build our digital capability.”

Capitol Records’ U.S. president/CEO Andrew Slater will step down from his position, which he has held since 2001. EMI is in the midst of being restructured, in an attempt to save $217 million.
