BREAKING NEWS: 33 KILLED IN VIRGINIA TECH SHOOTINGS

April 16, 2007 | Category:IN THE NEWS | Author: Josh Cox

UPDATE: DEATH TOLL HAS RISEN TO 33

At least 22 33 people have been killed, including the gunman, in what was the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history today at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Yall this really has me shaken up, because if you didn’t know I am in college as well, and college campuses have little security. This could’ve happened anywhere… My hearts are with the students, faculty, and their families. Here’s the story:

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people in the deadliest campus shooting rampage in U.S. history. The gunman was killed, bringing to death toll to 22, but it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”

The name of the gunman was not immediately released, and investigators offered no motive for the attack. It was not immediately known if the gunman was a student.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no immediate evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, “but all avenues will be explored.”

The bloodbath took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a coed dormitory that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building, authorities said.

Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm — and the campus was under lockdown, with students to stay indoors and away from the windows — when authorities got word of gunfire at the classroom building.

CIARA PERFORMS IN LOS ANGELES

April 13, 2007 | Category:OUT AND ABOUT | Author: Josh Cox

Ciara peformed a few of her hits at the premiere of Redline in Los Angeles on April 12th. If you haven’t seen it yet, BET ranked Ciara at number 25 for their Top 25 Dancers of All-Time countdown. People like Beyonce and Chris Brown were in the top 10. We all know that Ciara straight kills it with the dancing, and right now she’s really the only chick in the game that’s bringing some heat when it comes to moving. BET was wrong on so many levels to rank her so low… If you watch some of Beyonce’s new videos, a lot of her moves seem to be inspired by a lot of Ciara’s moves. But I don’t know why I’m complaing, it’s BET. They tend to screw up a lot of stuff.

JANET JACKSON, JERMAINE DUPRI SUED FOR $120 MILLION

April 12, 2007 | Category:IN THE NEWS | Author: Josh Cox

Lawyers for pop singer Janet Jackson were unsuccessful in their bid to have a lawsuit against her thrown out.

In a ruling made public yesterday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Rolando Acosta decided that a $120 million assault suit against Jackson can move forward, requiring the singer to give a deposition under oath.

According to New York Post reports, 41-year-old Leonard Salati alleges that two of Jackson’s bodyguards grabbed him and choked him when he attempted to pass the singer a note at Club Marquee, February 2004.

Lawyers for Jackson hoped to have the case dismissed by arguing that Jackson and her boyfriend, co-defendant Jermaine Dupri, were accompanied by only one bodyguard that evening, who they described as a 5-foot-8 Caucasian man, weighing only 180 pounds.

Judge Acosta ruled to allow the case to move forward, and remarked that despite Jackson’s claims, representatives for Club Marquee (which is also being sued) said that at least three bodyguards were present with Jackson on the evening in question, two of whom were African-American.

Okay, maybe it really did happen… but come on now, $120 million is a lot of frickin’ money for that. That guy is just trying to get rich quick.

AMERIE COVERS DUB MAGAZINE

April 12, 2007 | Category:THE PRINTING PRESS | Author: Josh Cox

Amerie is lookin really really nice as the covergirl for the June 2007 edition of DUB Magazine. But I’ve noticed that the cover of DUB seems to be reserved for entertainers who really aren’t doing so hot (ex: Danity Kane and Scott Stortch covered the most previous issues). But regardless of that, Amerie is lookin mighty fine, and hopefully her new album will do very well… whenever it drops. (Magazine cover scan credit goes to AmerieWeb.com)

TIMBALAND WAS RIGHT… ‘GIVE IT TO ME’ TOPS THE CHART

April 12, 2007 | Category:BILLBOARD REPORTS | Author: Josh Cox

Timbaland showed off his cocky side when he said “this song gone top the charts” in his verse on “Give It To Me.” He was right though, as the song, which features Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, jumps all the way from 42 to number 1 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, thanks to over 240,000 downloads. It is the second highest jump to number one in Billboard history. Coming in at number 2 this week is Akon’s “Don’t Matter,” follwed by his colloboration with Gwen Stefani, “The Sweet Escape,” at number 3. Fergie and Ludacris are “Glamorous” at number 4, followed by “This Is Why I’m Hot” by MIMS which falls from number 3 to number 5. Another interesting move in the top 10 is T-Pain’s “Buy U A Drank” featuring Yung Joc, which jumps to number 10 this week, proving that it is a very strong single since the video was just released this week. Check out the rest of this week’s Billboard Hot 100 at Billboard.com.

BLACK WOMEN ARE HAVING THE WORST WEEK EVER…

April 12, 2007 | Category:IN THE NEWS | Author: Josh Cox

This has definitely not been a good week for our black women. First they’re dropped from record labels, called ‘nappy headed hoes’ by an old ass white guy, and get fired from their primetime gigs. Here’s five reasons why black women are having the worst week ever:

1. SHAWNNA GETS DROPPED FROM DTP…
SOHH put truth to the speculation that Ludacris dropped Shawnna from his Disturbing tha Peace record label. Ludacris was ‘allegedly’ quoted as saying: “Shawnna is a very talented artist but is no longer rocking with DTP”. Shawnna released several albums, but “Gettin Some Head” was her only major hit.

2. BRANDY GOT FIRED…
Rumors about Brandy being replaced as a judge on NBC’s hit series America’s Got Talented began to surface late last week, and were confirmed by TMZ on Monday. The website confirmed that she was replaced by Sharon Osbourne. Rumor has it that her involvement in a December car wreck in Los Angeles that left a mother dead had a lot to do with the decision to get rid of Brandy.

3. INUS CALLS RUTGERS WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM ‘NAPPY HEADED HOES’…
Now this is the story that I’m sure everybody has heard about by now. Radio host Bob Inus was commentating on the NCAA women’s basketball championship game when he referred to the ladies of Rutgers University’s basketball team as “nappy headed hoes” and said that the ladies of the Tennessee team were much more attractive. The comments sparked outrage among the nation, and Inus’ racist ass got fired by both MSNBC and CBS. Unfortunately, nothing can replace the hurt and embarrassment that the girls of Rutgers and their coach have had to go through this week.

YOU’RE FIRED! - CBS PULLS THE PLUG ON DON IMUS

April 12, 2007 | Category:IN THE NEWS | Author: Josh Cox

Just a day after MSNBC dropped the simulcast of Don Imus’ radio show after he made controversial remarks about the Rutgers Univeristy women’s basketball team, CBS has also decided to cancel his controversial radio show. Check it out:

NEW YORK - CBS fired Don Imus from his radio program Thursday, the finale to a stunning fall for one of the nation’s most prominent broadcasters.

Imus initially was given a two-week suspension for calling the Rutgers women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos” on the air last week, but outrage continued to grow and advertisers bolted from his CBS radio show and its MSNBC simulcast.

“There has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society,” CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said in announcing the decision. “That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision.”

I’m glad they dropped him! I still don’t understand why people say these kinds of things and then have the nerve to apologize. This is not the first time he’s said stuff like this, and he obviously meant it. And when people find out a white person is racist, the first thing they say is “I have black friends…” or “I help out the black community….” Dude, shut the hell up! You’re a racist. Racist people like this will see their day in hell.

RIHANNA’S NEW ALBUM COVER

April 11, 2007 | Category:MUSIC NEWS & VIDEOS | Author: Josh Cox

This is “allegedly” the cover for Rihanna’s third album, Good Gone Girl Bad, which is due in stores on June 5th. Rihanna stays busy. She’s only been around for about 2 years, and she’s already on album number three. A lot of artists have been around for years, and are just now on their third and fourth albums. I guess more power to her.
