PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA

January 20, 2009 | Category:IN THE NEWS | Author: Josh Cox

Obama takes the Oath of Office, becoming the nation’s 44th president.

Shortly after noon E.S.T. today, history was made. President Obama was sworn into office, becoming the nation’s first African American president just one day after the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial holiday.

Many of you are probably thinking that this is a very late post, and it is, but I was too busy observing history on my television screen in amazement, honor and pride.

This is not just a victory for Blacks or African Americans, it is a victory for women, Latino Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Gay Americans, people all across the world; it is a victory for everyone.

IN HONOR OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

January 19, 2009 | Category:RANDOM ISH | Author: Josh Cox

Dr. King

Civil Rights pioneer Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have celebrated his 80th birthday last Thursday, and how happy would he be to see the nation’s first African American president, Barack Obama, take office tomorrow at noon.

If you are looking for a good way to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King, you’re encouraged to watch CNN’s special, From MLK to Today, which is airing right now on the network and will end at 3 p.m. C.S.T.

Dr. King’s entire “I Have A Dream” speech will be broadcast during the special. I know I’ll be watching.

Also, Obama has called for a “national day of service” today. I know most of you are off work or out of school, so why not take some of your free time and give back to the community. Your community will be grateful for it.

Damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Fifteen years ago, during the early morning hours of January 17, 1994, residents of the Los Angeles metro area were awakened by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that left 57 dead, thousands injured and many people homeless. Known as the Northridge earthquake, it was one of the costliest natural disasters in history.

Even after such a major disaster, L.A. is still having trouble getting property owners to retrofit certain buildings that easily collapse in quakes. Read about it at the LA Times.

MAN SHOT AT ‘NOTORIUS’ SCREENING

January 17, 2009 | Category:IN THE NEWS, THE WTF FILES | Author: Josh Cox

Jamal “Gravy” Woolard stars in Notorious.

Call it life imitating art, or somebody who lost their damn mind. A man was shot in a Greensboro, N.C., theater after an argument during a showing of Notorious, a film about the life and death of rapper Notorious B.I.G. From News 14 Carolina:

Police say a 32-year-old man was shot twice in the abdomen during an argument and about 700 people were evacuated Friday night from the Grand 18 at Four Seasons Station.

Greensboro police Lt. James Hinson told The News & Record of Greensboro the shooting victim underwent surgery at Moses Cone Hospital. The hospital said Saturday the man requested no information about his condition be given to the media.

Hinson says investigators have found no link between the movie and Friday’s shooting.

A spokeswoman for the theater’s owner says customers holding tickets for Friday’s showing of “Notorious” should contact the Grand 18 for refunds.

VH1′S RISKY KEEPS IT ‘REAL’

January 17, 2009 | Category:TV | Author: Josh Cox

Risky from VH1’s Real Chance of Love

Even though they didn’t show me too much in the beginning of the show, whenever they did, it wasn’t because I was stabbing someone in the back or doing this or doing that, keeping up drama. It was because I was being real. I was being a real woman. Even when Cali turned on me, I didn’t turn back on her. I feel like I was real the entire time and that should have sailed me all the way through, but I can’t change his feelings.

This is what reality star Risky had to say in a recent interview, after getting dissed on Real Chance of Love along with fellow finalist Cali when Chance decided not to pick anyone.

VH1’s reality shows usually bring out the fakest of the fake; crazy ass folks looking for their 15 minutes of fame, but Risky was possibly the realest person in VH1 reality show history, and we love her for it.

In what is possibly the funniest clip we’ve seen so far this year, rapper Yung Berg gets arrested for public intoxication and possession of marijuana after falling off a motor scooter in Miami Beach, Fla.

The arrest happened sometime last fall, but the footage just aired this week on TruTV’s Hot Pursuit. Can you say embarrassing?

What makes the clip even funnier is the fact that his manager assaults a police officer. Jesus, please take the wheel.
